"Maximum Points"
******************************************
You might see these words in advertising certain UK
rams.
In fact, this is often implied that this makes any ram's semen
" the very best in the land."
Keep these things in mind about that phrase.
Please note, not ALL sheep are taken to a show.
Some extremely fabulous overseas rams never go to a show.
Their offspring speak for themselves
and no need to have that confirmed by a judge
in a small political event.
I've seen several that I would do anything to have their semen.
Also,
to me it has more meaning if this award was directly from Swiss judges.
(See below in purple.)
These reflect my personal opinion and the opinion of some other breeders.
Please make your own decision about what is and isn't important to you.
Again, my opinion based on 25+ years of breeding livestock.
Maximum Points is an award given at certain sheep shows overseas.
(I am referring to the UK specifically as that is where
our frozen semen currently comes from.
We cannot get frozen semen from Switzerland.)
Be cautious when seeing these words thrown around
that some sheep that receive this award
are also owned by the people who put on the show
they are in.
After 25+ years of raising World Show winning livestock,
as well as putting on shows myself,
this part was extremely confusing to me.
How does this make sense ?
Unbiased "judge" results ?
In the horse world I NEVER show against my clients,
nor would I show animals at an event that
I put on and pay the judges.
This somewhat takes away from the "awards".
Not cool IMHO.

Further, the following explanation was provided to me
by a breeder who has been in the business for a while :
"None of the currently-available UK-bred Valais Blacknose rams
are known to have had Stud Book inspection or grading
because it is not required in the UK (or NZ).
The Grassroots Valais Blacknose registry in the UK
operates independently of both UK Societies.
Because none of the available rams have been graded,
none of the currently-available rams
(i.e., with straws available for North America)
have earned “Maximum Points” (Swiss grading scheme).
Rams in the UK have (an optional) chance to be graded
(and to possibly earn Maximum Points under Swiss judges)
at annual “Blacknose Beauties” show held by
Valais Blacknose Sheep Society UK.
( and hyperbole and word-twisting )
being used to confuse American & Canadian semen buyers.
You will make your own decisions
with the knowledge you have been provided.
